From: News Recent studies on some multipurpose contact lens solutions have found that such preparations can cause eye damage. One such study was detailed last week at the 8th National Congress on Optometry and Opticianry held in New York. Multipurpose contact lens solutions have caused serious eye problems for some users in the past. For example, in May 2006, Bausch & Lomb issued a worldwide recall of ReNu with MoistureLoc solution after it was linked to an outbreak of Fusarium keratitis, a potentially blinding eye infection. The Centers for Disease Control ultimately confirmed 180 cases of Fusarium keratitis in the U.S. that were associated with use of the recalled solution. |

About Defective Contact Lens Solution Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. Complete MoisturePLUS Multi-purpose Contact Lens Solution cleans and disinfects soft contact lenses. There is a recent increase of a rare but serious infection in people who wear soft contact lenses. The infection is Acanthamoeba keratitis, caused by a parasite that is commonly found in nature. Acanthamoeba keratitis can cause permanent damage to the cornea and loss of vision. Some patients may require a corneal transplant, a surgical procedure that replaces the clear outer covering of the eye, in order to maintain vision in the affected eye. Early diagnosis and treatment is important to prevent permanent damage of the cornea. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found an association between this type of infection and the use of Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Contact Lens solution. Serious Side Effects of Defective Contact Lens Solution Eyes of sufferers of these severe eye infections become irritated, sometimes with very sharp, stinging pains like grains of sand in one’s eye. The infected eye may ooze or become red and swollen Recall of Defective Contact Lens Solution On May 25, 2007, Advanced Medical Optics issued a press release announcing the voluntary recall of its Complete MoisturePLUS product from the market. Complaints that have been filed by plaintiffs charge that AMO's contact lens solution was not effective in disinfecting contact lenses, and vastly inferior to other multi-purpose solutions available on the market. |
